ZUCK PARTNERS WITH MICROSOFT FOR AI
A busy week for tech that saw Meta release Llama 2, its open-source LLM (large language model) with double the context length, for free. For research and commercial use, the move expands its Microsoft partnership in an epic showing of if you can't beat 'em, join ‘em to Apple. How good is it? Not bad by all accounts. Available in multiple tiers (7B, 13B, 70B) which means it's pretty close to GPT-3.5 (so good on reasoning tasks, less good on coding) and similar to (or better than) Google's PaLM-540B but (really) behind GPT-4 and PaLM-2-L (find all the nerdy info here). Llama 2 will run on Qualcomm chips on phones and PCs in 2024 and per Qualcomm's CEO will power a lot of virtual assistants. Try it out here.
Meta’s open-source AI model, the key difference to other companies (cough…OpenAI) will allow commercial applications although Meta will stop disclosing what data it uses to train the company's giant AI models (not great or particularly open). One nice touch is that Meta won't allow big platforms to use its model to grow citing a clause that anyone who has +700m users (so Google/Apple) can't get commercial access to Llama2. Open indeed...
Apple, in the same week the company threatened to remove services like FaceTime and iMessage from the UK rather than weaken their security under a proposed Investigatory Powers Act, saw a 'leak' around Ajax, Apple’s generative AI model insiders are calling 'Apple GPT'. Set to launch in 2024, Apple isn't famed for these sorts of product launches, which has a lot of people wondering how they'll roll this out to the masses. Details are sketchy, but Apple needed to come out with something to stop others from completely running away with the limelight.

SO WHAT?
__ DO __ Think critically. A key question remains. Just how 'open' is AI really? The answer is not very. While open source should yield better research, better, and long-term benefits to society, the reality is that companies have bottom lines to protect and Meta is no different. Equally, people can use the technology however they want - for good or bad. // __ DON’T __ Forget big companies like control. The companies are providing a service as those that will benefit most from generative AI will certainly not own the LLM models they use. The real value isn't the product but controlling the distribution of usage. Think of it like choosing a browser. In the future, your options may be determined by the computer you use.
