GOOGLE HAS A QUANTUM LEAP
Not even Elon launching a new AI venture (xAI) trumps Google's announcement that they have made a quantum computer that instantly does what it normally takes Frontier, the world’s leading supercomputer, 47 years to do. While this may not sound groundbreaking, the ramifications are staggering.
Quantum computers use qubits instead of bits to store and process information. Qubits can exist in a superposition of states, which means that they can be both zero and one at the same time allowing quantum computers to perform calculations that are exponentially faster than classical computers. Google’s new quantum computer has 70 qubits, which is 17 more than the previous model's 53 qubits. The increase in qubits makes the new machine 241 million times faster and more powerful than the 2019 version.
The entire point of this experiment was to test just how well Google’s quantum computer works compared to standard and traditional supercomputers. For context, cracking a credit card which has a 2048-bit RSA key would require a 20 million qubit machine and take about 100 days. Some forms of cryptography are immune to “brute forcing” attacks, but a lot of the world’s passwords and security systems are vulnerable which is just one reason that makes quantum technology so important to understand and utilise in the right way and not make sure that the technology is abused or used against countries etc.
Although quantum computers are still considered in their infancy, there are already attacks that can steal encrypted data with the intention to crack it once codebreaking quantum computers become a reality. Attacks aren’t the only concern. AI systems will be able to learn and improve faster. If quantum entanglement is fully entangled, algorithms may also be able to exploit correlations between variables more easily. Therefore, governments, businesses, and other major organisations must begin the shift toward postquantum cryptography - and knowledge - now.

SO WHAT?
__ DO __ Know why you don’t (or won’t!) hear much about quantum. The details are less sexy than AI art or computers that write books so it doesn’t get as much play - it’s up to you to stay abreast of this incredibly important and exciting advancement in computing. // __ DON’T __ Ignore the importance quantum will play in the future as it will do much more than simply make any encryption that exists now outdated, along with increasing costs for additional security measures to be implemented fast. Keep up to date with where quantum computing is going. Quantum’s ability to change multiple, and unrelated, industries is what makes quantum technology both fascinating and a liability.
