THE AI WAR LINES ARE DRAWN
THE OVERVIEW: With SVB saved (ish), Credit Swiss is now looking extremely wobbly this week with 186 banks (NOTE: a pinch of slat time) possibly ready for collapse. Meta rolled out paid verification and announced 10k more jobs will be cut, Google warned Samsung phone users about massive security risks, Google suffered multiple new phone leaks, Ryan Reynolds sold Mint mobile to T-Mobile, Microsoft laid off its entire responsible AI team, Samsung was called out over its moon photos, Amazon is stopping selling newspaper and magazine subscriptions, Twitter wants you to love bookmarks, several governments banned TikTok on gov phones, Biden is threatening to ban TikTok if the Chinese owners don’t sell their shares, oh, and Twitch lost their CEO of 16 years,
THE BIG NEWS: OpenAI dropped GPT-4 on the world, and Google announced its AI-everything “within a few months’. The AI wars have officially started, and round one may have gone to OpenAI (ChatGPT and DALL·E), but round two is anything but certain.
What is certain is that GPT-4 is ridiculously more powerful than its predecessor, and barely anyone knew how to use that(!). The biggest difference is image input; previously, only text could be input, but now you can submit images as part of your queries. The second big change is language; GPT-4 has been trained in 26 languages worldwide, including five Indian ones. A big plus for about 6 billion people around the world. GPT-4 also have way more data points. From 165m to 3 trillion data points, according to sources (OpenAI are not saying). GPT-4 can now also take longer inputs, meaning longer form content and better reasoning output. Lastly, OpenAI said it has spoken with 50 AI experts, so the system will be less likely to be creepy or help people say and do bad things. Problem solved(!). The differences in reality, however, are that it is a slightly less wrong chatbot. Here’s what people have been trying already.
Don’t count Google out, there are a few(!) billion up for grabs, and Google won’t give an inch without a fight. The search giant presented the world with a video about upcoming features and product integrations that made many PowerPoint users very happy. So did Microsoft. The reality is that you’ve spent the last 10-20 years honing skills that a computer can now do for you, so the thing to learn now is critical thinking and creativity. OpenAI is now very much open to having your money, whereas before, it was an open-source non-profit. There will be no more secret sauce sharing because the powers that be aren’t fond of people pointing out flaws and colossal repercussions intrinsically linked to our species' future.
SO WHAT?
__ DO __ Know that OpenAI has gone from signing a ‘we’re open and transparent’ tune to a ‘nothing to see here, mate’ ditty. The complete 180 approach isn’t sitting well with many people and reeks of Microsoft protectionism. Remember Scroogled? // __ DON’T __ Think AI’s controversy is going to dial down anytime soon. The nerds are having a field day and are pushing the edges to check for leaks. Expect problems. It's increasingly clear that AI won't - more than can't - be stuffed in the box. What comes next isn't clear. We are being forced to accept things left, right and centre because there's no enforceable element to slow the development of these technologies. In these scenarios, there are usually several casualties; the poor, the uneducated and the unconnected. Things can get dangerous (as much as useful) very quickly.
