DON’T POUR ONE OUT FOR TWITTER YET
What else could be the big story this week bar the ongoing car crash that is the Twitter takeover? Not even Swifties having a meltdown. A recap; Elon fired the head of sales (after begging her to stay last week), CBS news halted posting on Twitter, banned accounts have been reactivated, workers were ordered into the office, workers were then told WFH is ok, +1,200 workers upped and quit, seven Senators sent letters to the FTC Chair, 2FA had a massive security flaw, leaked documents and that only goes back as far as Thursday.
Last night, Twitter (Elon) reinstated Donald Trump (despite no moderation board in place as promised…last week) after a poll voted 52% in favour of letting the satsuma-n back on. Trump has so far not tweeted as of writing this at 8:01 am 20/10/22. He has previously said that he wouldn’t and wants to focus on his dumpster fire, Truth Social. Time will tell if he can resist talking to his (unamplified reach of) +80M people on Twitter vs his 2M on Truth.
Why Elon appears to be tanking Twitter, just to hand it to someone is a mystery to most. I think ‘tanking’ is just our perception of his management style up close. The same style that he’s employed privately before. The ability to replicate is what makes greatness, but not at the cost of running through walls and burying everyone else. Publicly calling people out and generally sh!tposting isn’t a leader, it’s bullying.
Twitter’s success/failure will have big ramifications for 2023. Secure your ticket for TBD Conference before they run out, to understand how these seismic shifts will change a lot of industries in 2023. You’ll need to prepare.
SO WHAT?
__ DO __ See the ‘how’ as important (if not more) than the ‘what’. The ‘hardcore’ 2.0 Twitter might be great, but we have to stop flogging people to make things and calling it business as usual’ or acceptable. // __ DON’T __: Run to Mastodon. Aside from just 2m users, it’s hard to use and hasn’t caught on in over six years. Maybe I’ll eat my words, but it’ll take a lot more eyeballs before I am recommending you spend much time on it.
HOW TO HANDLE ANYTHING THAT COMES YOUR WAY: You can pre-order the new version of ‘Disruptive Technologies’ Jan 2023 containing the TBD framework. There will be rewards for pre-orders, so keep the receipt!
