ROE OVERTURN IS BAD FOR BUSINESS
A depressing end of the week with SCOTUS turning back the clock 50 years and repealing Roe Vs Wade, affecting millions of people across the U.S. now and for generations to come. Tech responded with reaffirmed promises to pay travel costs up to £4,000 for employees looking to get an abortion. Uber, Meta, Google, Disney, Duolingo and others all pressed the P.R. go button as soon as the news broke.
Aside from good P.R., the companies are making good business decisions. Twenty-six states are expected to ban abortion now Roe v. Wade is overturned. With fewer healthcare options, women will be compelled to have more children and possibly earlier than planned. Making up half the workforce, that's going to impact any, if not all, businesses. With disproportionate percentages of childcare responsibilities, women will also be forced into part-time jobs that often pay lower rates and have less job security. jobs. After all, most women who seek an abortion cite economic and employment reasons.
Without gender equality, there is no real democracy. Businesses need to push hard against this decision, not only because it was forced through, from a costs-perspective and not just because it is unlikely to be the last decision the packed court rules over. Most people missed, for example, that Miranda rights are now harder to enforce. Justice Clarence Thomas has already written an opinion that the court should reconsider its precedents on contraception, L.G.B.T.Q. rights and same-sex marriage.
SO WHAT?
__ DO __ Plan for unrest and prep those support statements. Understand how the court is stacked and what you can do to support change. It’s never been more important to understand who supports you and how you can not support those who don’t. This is a good thread from AOC. Aside from this, look at what health apps are tracking and their terms of service on handing over data. Period tracking apps just became a liability.
// __ DON'T __ Think that because you don’t have a uterus that this doesn’t affect your rights and won’t affect you. Ask yourself if you want to choose when you become a dad? That’s just gone. Want just one kid? You’ve now got to get a vasectomy or abstain. What about the right to wear a condom? That could be next.
